L-3 Marine Systems International Supplies Equipment for Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis® Class
HAMBURG, Germany, October 29, 2014 – L-3 Marine Systems International (L-3 MSI) announced today that it has been awarded a contract to provide its NACOS Platinum navigation system, including an integrated dynamic positioning system, for the third ship in Royal Caribbean International’s (RCI) Oasis® class, built by STX France at its shipyard in Saint-Nazaire.
The innovative 362-metre-long, 227,700-gross-ton ship, with a capacity of 6,360 passengers and a crew of 2,100, will be among the world’s largest cruise liners, together with its sister vessels, the Oasis of the Seas® and the Allure of the Seas®, and is slated for delivery in spring 2016.
“This project represents a major undertaking and confirms our continued dedication to supplying the world’s cruise ship fleets with proven, state-of-the-art technology,” said Ulrich Weinreuter, president of L-3 Marine Systems International. “We are extremely proud to once again be selected to provide our innovative control systems on Royal Caribbean International’s newest vessels. L-3’s comparable Platinum range of equipment will also be installed aboard RCI’s three Quantum-class vessels being built by MEYER WERFT at its Papenburg shipyard in northern Germany.”
The navigation equipment for the new vessel includes L-3 SAM Electronics’ NACOS Platinum navigation system, comprising five X- and S-band radars linked to 9 Multipilot workstations for the combined display of ARPA radar, ECDIS and conning functions. This unique combination of integrated voyage planning, monitoring and track control significantly reduces the workload for ship navigators and improves navigational safety. The scope of supply is completed by a full set of L-3’s navigation sensors, a compass and steering control system, as well as a GMDSS A3 set.
L-3’s NACOS Platinum series will also include an advanced dynamic positioning system, developed by L-3 Dynamic Positioning & Control Systems, and features four multifunction touch screen consoles, one CP1 DP controller, and interfaces for required environmental and position reference sensors. Positioning software, specifically developed for critical cruise ship station-keeping operations, is designed to significantly reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.
