NACOS PLATINUM Upgrades for Star Cruises’ Bridge System

Hamburg, Aril 1, 2011 – Lyngsø Marine, a subsidiary of Hamburg-based
L-3 Marine & Power Systems’ company SAM Electronics, is to upgrade
existing integrated navigation facilities for three Star Cruises’ vessels with
installation of new-generation NACOS Platinum navigation communication and
control system aboard Star Pisces, SuperStar Aquarius and Superstar Libra.
Outfitting of the new systems, which will replace earlier NACOS navigation
command configurations, is to be progressively carried out by Lyngsø Marine in
Malaysia between next January and May.

Newly developed by Lyngsø Marine and SAM Electronics, the NACOS
Platinum series of ship control systems feature system-wide standardised
hardware and software components collectively providing a greatly improved
simplicity and reliability of operation while ensuring optimum levels of
operational safety and reduced maintenance costs. Continuity of operation is
assured by extensive self-monitoring facilities supported by online diagnostics.
The networked system architecture likewise ensures unprecedented levels of
functionality and performance.

The versatility of the NACOS Platinum Series is illustrated by the new IP-radar,
which by direct connection to the ship’s IP network enables the complete radar
image to be accessible from any workstation. Similarly, the ECDIS display can
be made available for viewing in an engine control room, in the Captain’s office,
or in public rooms of the ship.

A key concept of the NACOS Platinum Series products is that all products are
developed according to User Centered Design (UCD) principles. Building on
SAM Electronics’ and Lyngsø Marine’s years of expertise, and that of leading
international Human Factors institute, a very ambitious collaborative design
process has been undertaken resulting in a Human Machine Interface (HMI)
which is intuitive, transparent and completely consistent across the full range of
products.

The result is a system which is efficient and satisfactory to use and by
providing unrivalled overview and simplicity of operation, the system enables the
crew to concentrate on operating the ship safely without any undue distraction
or stress.

Captain Gustaf Gronberg, Fleet Captain and Senior Vice President of Marine
Operation of Star Cruises said, “We always place safety as our top priority and
we are proud that Star Cruises has entered its 15th year free of navigation
accident and insurance claims. With the upgrade of the bridge system to
NACOS Platinum series, we are dedicated to continue our exemplary record for
a safe and comfortable cruise experience to our guests.”

The navigation assemblies commissioned for all three Star Cruises’ vessels will
each comprise one X and two S-band IP-radars linked to five Multipilot
multifunction consoles with radar-controlled Trackpilots and Ecdispilots and four
conning displays. Supplementary navaids such as DGPS, doppler logs, gyros,
echosounders and wind sensors will be linked via networked architecture to the
Multipilots, as will bridge navigation watch alarm systems in accordance with
new IMO requirements.
