SAM Electronics Shaft Alternators for 15 Ships

Hamburg, July 8, 2011 – Hamburg-based SAM Electronics, an L-3 company,
announced at Nor-Shipping 2011 orders for 17 of its Pulse Width Modulation
(PWM) frequency converter shaft alternators for installation aboard 15 ships
undergoing construction at yards in China, Germany and South Korea. All are due
for completion in 2012.

Commissionings of the energy-saving power supply systems include 4500 kW
units for four new container vessels being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries in
South Korea for delivery to Hapag Lloyd while five bulk carriers building at the
Chengxi in China for CSL are each to be equipped with 800 kW versions; the
Chinese yard is also completing an additional two bulk carriers for CSL, both of
which are being fitted with 2500 kW assemblies.

Other orders cover supply of 550 kW systems for two multi-purpose vessels
building at Kouan Shipyard, China, for Harren & Partner. Meanwhile, in Germany
two new 195 metre DFDS ro-ro’s being constructed by P+S Werften, Stralsund,
are each to have dual 800 kW systems.

Designed for supply of mains power via ship’s engine, SAM’s range of shaft
alternators provide significantly improved rates of power generation at lower cost.
With a PWM converter based on latest IGBT (integrated gate bipolar transistor)
technology, systems feature a reduced number of components, less cabling, lower
cost and no requirement for a synchronous compensator. The converter itself
ensures continuity of mains power under all load conditions without additional
support. Supported by fully digitised control facilities which can also be used for
monitoring, testing and simulation of all operating functions, systems are
additionally capable of reducing fuel consumption costs as well as those affecting
maintenance. A projected return on capital outlay for an installation can typically
be between two and four years, depending on estimates based on 6,000 operating
hours per year.

Worldwide sales of SAM Electronics’ shaft generators now exceed 400 systems.
