SAM Electronics Group - Well Placed for Offshore Markets
Hamburg, July 15, 2011 Taking advantage of booming world offshore markets,
SAM Electronics Group has won a significant number of orders in a wide range of
areas. Key factors in this success include the Company's broad technology base
and its international reach with subsidiaries and partner companies in Europe,
Asia and America.
L-3 Valmarine, SAM's affiliated partner company in Norway, has completed a
number of important undertakings, having equipped a whole series of state-of-the-
art offshore construction and platform supply vessels with integrated navigation
systems meeting highest class requirements. One outstanding project has been
the 157 meter-long Skandi Aker, which was voted Ship of the Year at SMM 2010.
Built by STX Europe’s Norwegian yard at Søviknes and operated by Aker Oilfield
Services, it is one of the world's most advanced offshore multi-purpose vessels.
L-3 Valmarine supplied the entire navigation package comprising two X-band and
S-band chart radars with integrated Trackpilot and three Chartpilots with ECDIS
and conning functions, a planning station and various other navigation sensors.
Elsewhere, Norwegian shipping company Solstad has decided to equip new
vessels in its fleet with the recently-launched NACOS Platinum integrated vessel
control system, for which SAM has already received a significant number of
orders. The network-based system, which is also ideal for state-of-the-art bridge
assemblies on offshore vessels, here consists of an S and X-band IP radars
connected via an Ethernet network to seven multi-functional Multipilot
workstations, including bridge wing and aft bridge units. Each workstation can be
used as a radar or ECDIS as well as for conning functions. Using dual-head
technology, which enables simultaneous function processing, the conning system
can run on a second display while the master station operates in an ECDIS mode.
In addition to a Trackpilot for accurate tracking, the Solstad configuration also
includes a new SAM 3410 AIS transponder, a VDR 4350, an echosounder and
DGPS, all of which which are directly connected to the network system. The first
new 94m-long platform supply vessel is due to be delivered by STX’s Langsten
shipyard at the end of this year.
In another venture, a 130m-long accommodation service vessel recently delivered
to the Norwegian shipping company Østensjø by the Spanish yard, Asteillerios HJ
Barreras, has been equipped with a similar integrated navigation system
comprising S-band and X-band radars, three Multipilot workstations connected to
the bridge wing, and two Chartpilot stations. Each Multipilot workstation can once
more be used as a standard radar or ECDIS, including conning functions.
Additional navigation sensors, including a VDR 4350, have been fitted alongside
the Trackpilot for accurate tracking. The vessel is designed to transport around 600 offshore personnel to and from North Sea platforms.
Alongside extraction of fossil fuels for the oil and gas industries, power generation
from offshore wind turbines is playing an increasingly important role in the future-
focused provision of climate-friendly renewable energy programmes. Consequently,
numerous construction support vessels are needed for transportation and
construction of wind turbines. SAM has already received several major orders to
supply integrated navigation systems together with complete electrical packages
and comprehensive drive systems for such vessels. Orders include one for RWE
Innogy’s construction ship being built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine
Engineering (DSME) in Korea for delivery at the end of this year. SAM's local
subsidiary, L-3 Marine Systems Korea, is equipping the purpose-built vessel
measuring 109 meter-long and 40 meter wide with a NACOS Platinum integrated
navigation system together with a dynamic positioning capability from L-3 DP&CS in the US.
Since offshore wind turbines are exposed to much tougher weather conditions than
their land counterparts, they have to include, among other things, fully automated
safety facilities. This particular requirement is readily met by FUNA Global Safety
Systems, a subsidiary of FUNA International recently acquired by SAM, whose
expertise includes provision of customised fire prevention solutions for both
onshore and offshore energy supply equipment. Specially networked solutions for
reliable protection typically comprise dedicated announcement, smoke extraction,
video surveillance and communications facilities combined with an intelligent fire
alarm system supported by an intuitive extinguishing capability.
